A 22 year young Brian E Downey here so precise on these really sophisticated fills and rolls, at the same time so loose and in the back pocket at all times after only three years of playing the drums at all – really creating a testament to the Motown style in this recording ! Lucky him his fabulous singer performer musician wife #PattiHall introduced him into the Detroit scene!

If you have noticed other Detroit or Chicago recordings with Brian E. Downey on the drums please let us know – this is however the only vinyl that survived in his household!

The capital’s grand daddy of the shuffle put together another great version of his ever evolving band formations and is celebrating Afro-American composers and musicians, presenting Blues & Jazz and everything in between with the ease of a southern breeze!

Especially Brent Weatherall on the guitar continues to amaze with musicality and versatility and has honed and polished his singing beautifully. He used to also play a lot of bass with Downey, who now finally, has his female singer of 5 years on the bass: Maren Molthan who seems to enjoy to sing over her own pockets and sure makes a point in holding down a funky groove. A long way from her native Germany, she seems to have scooped up some of that southern sweetness in her stage presence throughout extended trips across the USA. No more live performances @ L’Escalier Montréal?

Back At The Chicken Shack (Jimmy Smith 1960) was recorded here with Brian Downey feat. “Pedro” Ullmann @ L’Escalier Montréal THU 12 JULY 2012, a hot night it was.

Bad news though, coz the venue remains closed to live performances since June 2013. Please show your solidarity with this petition to reinstate live performances @ L’Escalier Montreal. The delay by the City of Montreal seems arbitrary knowing the venue has been fully sound proofed and was ready to reopen in July 2013 yet remains closed because of which these cats have lost four shows this summer with no recompensation or replacement whatsoever.

After months of effort by L’Escalier Montreal to retrieve a permit by the city of MOntreal to restart their EVERYDAY live presentations the venue is still unable to do so, despite the whole level having been completely overhauled –

The Brian Downey Band feat. Montreal’s own Pedro Ullmann lost 4 (!!!!) shows that way with no replacement whatsoever – please give the minister an earfull, phone as follows:

BarKanada – diesmal mit einem Interview mir Gordie Tentrees, der seine fünfte CD vorstellt und mit Fred Eaglesmith und vielen anderen MusikerInnen vom 13. September an während der Tin Can Caravan Tour in Roadhouses an der berühmten Route 66 von Chicaco nach Los Angeles zu sehen und zu hören sein wird – davon abgesehen kommt er auch nach Deutschland, im November, siehe mein Konzerteintrag hier nebenan.
