Dan Mangan spiele ich am Samstag, hier ist eine akustische Version des Titels “Basket”.
Dan Mangan, ein Name wie ein Spurenelement, die Musik nicht weniger bedeutungsvoll. Für die Sendung habe ich den Titel “Sold” ausgewählt, von der in 2009 erschienen CD “Nice, Nice, Very Nice”, nominiert für den Polaris Preis. Ich habe mehrere seiner Titel auf Myspace angehört, wo auch Mangan flüssig und mit viel Gefühl über den Weg mit den Worten tanzt. Falls Ihr das live erleben wollt, na da habt Ihr Glück, denn Dan Mangan spielt am 24. September auf dem Reeperbahnfest in Hamburg, tags zuvor ist er im niederländischen Eindhoven gebucht, am 25. September gastiert er im Leipziger Paris Syndrom, am 26. und 27. in den Schweizer Städten Fribourg und in Basel im Parterre. Im Stuttgarter Café Galao kann man Dan Mangan am 29. September sehen, in der Sparte 4 in Saarbrücken am 30. und dann geht’s für fünf weitere Konzerte noch nach England.

Damit kommen wir zum exquisiten Konzerttip des Monats August für Euch: Shakura S’Aida, Ihr erinnert Euch, die kanadische Blues-Queen kommt Ende August in die Schweiz, nach Belgien und Italien und hat auch eine neue CD mit dem Titel “Brown Sugar” veröffentlicht. Ich spiele “Break Your Heart”:

Shakura S’Aida mit Break Your Heart, von Ihrer lange erwarteten, im April veröffentlichten CD “Brown Sugar.” Dieser Song ist speziell für Dich, Netti, aber ich hoffe natürlich, daß auch alle anderen ZuhörerInnen diese fantastische Sängerin genießen können, zumal sie drei Konzerte in Europa gibt:
Freitag, den 27. August kann man sie in Sierre in der Schweiz zum Sierre Bluesfestival sehen, am folgenden Samstag im belgischen Gevarenwinkel anläßlich des Blues & Jazz Festivals und dann geht’s am Sonntag nach Pordenone, Italien, wo Shakura S’Aida für das Pordenone Blues Festival gebucht ist. Falls Ihr es nicht zu diesen Konzerten schafft, S’Aida spielt viel in Kanada, und der Erlöß einer Ihrer Songs, “Angels On High”, kommt den Opfern der Erdbebenkatastrophe in Haiti zu Hilfe. Shakura S’Aida, aus Toronto, Kanada, mit meinen wärmsten Empfehlungen.
Ein sehr witziges Video, ich liebe die Vibraphone-Szene, hihi. Meaghan Smith war auf der langen Liste des Polarispreises und betört mit geschniegelter Kulisse und Inszenierung. Hahaha!

Ihr hoert die Jazz Newcomerin Brandi Disterheft am Kontrabass, am Gesang Holly Cole, der Titel lautet “He’s Walking” – auf ihrem zweiten ALbum “Second Side” findet man ihre eigenen Kompositionen in sehr vielen verschiedenen Stilrichtungen – eine interessante Produktion. Um den atmosphärischen Charakter zu illustrieren, läuft hier im Hintergrund der Titel Sketches Of Belief, von derselben CD – die gebürtige Vancouverin studiert augenblicklich in New York mit legendaerem Kontrabassist Ron Carter und spielt auf dem Festival Du Jazz de Montreal. Checkt die Info und jede Menge Video auf ihrer myspace Seite, der Name buchstabiert sich B-R-A-N-D-I D-I-S-T-E-R-H-E-F-T.
Ich moechte Euch in dieser Juli Ausgabe zeigen, wie die Kanadier ihren Nationalfeiertag begehen und spiele daher viel Musik von den KünstlerInnen, die am 1.Juli in Ottawa auf dem Parlamentshügel aufgetreten sind, z.B. der Montreal Jubilation Chor. “Knock Me A Kiss”, ein guter, alter Louis Jordan Tune, hier in der Interpretation von Dione Taylor, von der in 2006 veroeffentlichten CD “I Love Being Here With You”. Auch sie unterhielt die Massen auf dem Parlamentshuegel zum Nationalfeiertag in Ottawa, genauso wie H’SAO, die einige Konzerte gebucht haben und im September in Brisbane, Australien spielen. Zuvor kann man sie auch in Neuschottland auf der Buehne sehen: H’SAO spielen live zum Atlantic Jazz Festival in Halifax am 16. Juli 2010. Diese neuen Kanadier, wie die kanadischen Immigrationsbehoerden die Einwanderer gerne nennen, stammen aus dem Tschad und haben sich in der französischsprachigen Provinz Quebec eine neue Heimat gesucht. Ich spiele den Titel, “sao”, ein Remix eines früheren Stueckes aus dem Jahre 2009.

Les Nomades (Montage) Samian ft. Shauit – La Paix Des Braves 2007
Reggae ist häufig mit der Karibik und speziell Jamaica assoziiert, der Inuit-Rapper aus dem hohen Norden der Provinz Quebec hat es aber auch ganz gut drauf – wir hörten ihn hier für den Titel Les Nomades (Montagne), von Samien, ebenfalls ein ursprünglicher Kanadier. Dass Shauit Bestandteil des Rock auf’m Hügel zum kanadischen Nationalfeiertag am 1. Juli ist, sendet ein Signal an alle Kanadier und kanadischen Ureinwohner – schmerzhaft frisch ist die Erfahrung mit den Residential Schools, in denen die minderjährigen Kinder kanadischer Ureinwohner bis in die 80ziger Jahre verschleppt wurden und nicht nur Opfer von Reppressalien und Kulturdruck wurden, sondern häufig auch Missbrauch ausgesetzt waren. Es scheint, als wolle die Gegenwartskultur bewusst mit dieser Ignoranz brechen und jegliche Verbrechen beenden und, statt sie zu diskriminieren, die indigenen kanadischen Völker in ihrem Wert anerkennen. Dafür sind solche offiziellen Anlässe immer herrlich, sieht man sich jedoch an, wie gängiges und gültiges Recht die Ausbeutung von Bodenschätzen über jeden Einwand der Anrainer hinweg rücksichtslos favorisiert, kann man auch zu anderen Schlüssen kommen.

Nun zu einem meiner kanadischen Lieblinge: Ron Sexsmith, das Babyface unter den nördlichen Songwritern, arbeitet an einer neuen CD, deshalb behaltet meinen Lieblingskomponisten im Auge. Angeblich waren alle Aufnahmen letzt’ Jahr zu Weihnachten schon abgeschlossen. Darüber habe ich auch ein Interview mit seinem Produzenten auf Sexsmith’s Internetseite gefunden, das spiele ich gleich. Seitdem warten die Fans ungeduldig, wann die neuen Songs denn nun erhältlich sind. Im Anschluss an das Interview hört ihr ein Stück von der CD “Exit Strategy For The Soul” von vor zwei Jahren, gegen Ende der Unterhaltung sprechen Sexsmith und sein Produzent Martin Terefe auch von diesem, wie ich finde, wunderschönem Stück.

Neue CD von The Sojourners, hier der Titel “Nobody Can Turn Me Around” von der neuen CD. Die Sojourners, drei bekennende Herren aus Ralls, Texas, Chicago, Illinois and Alexandria, Louisiana, die in Vancouver leben – wurden zum Mikrofon gebeten – Kanadisches Blues Ikon Jim Byrnes holte die christlichen Gesangsschmiede aus diversen Kirchen in seine eigenen Arrangements, eine Kostprobe davon als naechstes. Jim Byrnes, spielt zum Ottawa Blues Festival mit Steve Dawson’s Mississipi Sheiks Project Anfang July hier in der Hauptstadt, ich spiele von Byrnes’ CD House Of Refuge aus dem Jahr 2006, “Didn’t It Rain”, und ja, im Hintergrund singen die Sojourners.

Juli um 8 Uhr abends auf der Buehne des Hardrockcafes auf dem Gelaende des Ottawa Bluesfest spielt Steve Dawson live mit Jim Byrnes and The Sojourners – viel Spass dabei!
Ne tolle neue CD gibt es von Fred Eaglesmith, der Titel lautet Cha Cha Cha – ich mag den Titel “Better Get On Your Knees” von der CD davor, DIE heisst “Tinderbox”, kam vor zwei Jahren heraus. und war so toll, dass Eaglesmith dafuer einen Juno gewann – Das sehr coole Video auf YouTube, kann man im Internet ansehen, komplett mit Lego-Schauspielern, die einem zweifelhaften Prediger auf Kirchenbaenken zuhoeren.

Gord Downie von The Tragically Hip hat auch ein neues Album produziert, da die Festival Saison in vollem Gange ist, habe ich ein Live Stueck fuer Euch ausgewaehlt, fuer seine beiden Toechter singt Downie hier “Trick Rider”, live vom Mariposa Folk Festival in 2003 – kann man auf Youtube ansehen.
Von Buck 65’s myspace der folgende Trailor zu seiner gerade erschienenen DVD “The Lost Tapes” in Reminiszenz zu einigen Aufnahmen, die dem Musik-Kuenstler in einer Kirche fruehzeitig abhanden gekommen sind. Sein richtiger Name ist Rich Terfry, was ich ebenfalls schwer zu glauben finde. Terfry (hoert sich doch total wie “stirfry” an, oder nich? LOL) koproduziert mit vielen interessanten MusikerInnen und moderiert auch eine Songwriter Radioshow auf der CBC, der Canadischen Broadcasting Corporation, im Radio. Neuerdings stellen die immer jede Menge Livekonzerte ins Internet, da muesst Ihr Euch mal zu Radio 2, also zwei, durchklicken, finde ich persoenlich ganz toll, speziell fuer schwer beschaeftigte Intensiv-lebende Leute, die wie ich gerne mal Sendungen verpassen. Das war Honeybee von Chloe Albert, sie spielt ueber Juni und Juli viel in Halifax und auf Prince Edward Island – genaue Konzertdaten findet man auf ihrer Myspace seite, der Link wie immer auf ABROADCOM.NET – dort habe ich auch alle anderen kanadischen Konzerttips gelistet. Zum Beispiel auch die Shuffle Demons, deren 25 Jahre Wiedervereinigungstour sie heute nach Brockville bringt – so hoeren sie sich an, hier sind die Toronto-Jazzer mit dem Titel Spadina Bus – gefaellt mir, die singen ueber Oeffentlichen Nahverkehr, das finde ich richtig gut – gut und richtig! Don’t Do It, von der ersten CD Rites Of Passage, die Georgette Fry schon 1997 veroeffentlichte. Inzwischen hat sie noch drei weitere CDs produziert und kommt auch fuer’s 1000-Island-Jazz-Festival nach Brockville, am Donnerstag, den 17. Juni ist sie in der First Presbyterian Church, show time ist 19 Uhr.
Ebenfalls in Kingston residiert Lynne Hanson, sie spielt mit ihrer Formation Chivaree auch in Brockville, das iist am Samstag den 12.Juno. Kingston’s Lynne Hanson, nicht zu verwechseln mit der Ottawa-Musikerin desselben Namens habe ich schon vor Jahren in Merrickville kennengelerntt, spielte Bass und sang wunderschoene zweite Stimmen fuer Kevin Head, ein Lehrer und Gitarrenspieler, den ich mir fuer meine Auftritte auch hin und wieder mal ausleihe, vielleicht solte ich’s mal mit ihr versuchen – ich schweife ab, aber ich spiele heute abend eine Girls’ Night Out, daher bin ich vermutlich etwas abgelenkt – New Romantics, so beschreibt Chivaree ihren musikalischen Stil. Ich mag’s ja immer mal gerne groovy, daher spiele ich No One Calls You Sweatheart von ihrer ersten CD The Garden. Buehne frei fuer Chivaree!

Oh, India Lorelei Loveridge Bakhoor 2010
Mein Konzerttip hier zum Schluss mit der in Kanada geborenen und in Manchester, England lebenden Lorelei Loveridge – sie hat eine Tour entlang der englischen Kueste gebucht fuer Juni und Juli – muesst Ihr mal auf Ihre myspace gucken. Ne Zeitlang hat die Musikerin auch in Saudi-Arabien gelebt, 11 Jahre, viele andere Laender bereist – “Oh, India”, habe ich ausgewaehlt, der erste Titel der soeben erschienenen CD Bakhoor – was das heissen soll, habe ich in Wikipedia nachgeschlagen, Zitat “Bakhoor is the Arabic name given to woodchips soaked in fragrant oils, or in most Arab countries it is the name given to scented bricks. These scented chips/bricks are burned in incense burners to perfume the home and clothing with a rich thick smoke. This is used specifically on special occasions like weddings or on Fridays or generally just to perfume the house.
The bukhoor is usually burned in a mabkhara, a traditional incense burner (censer). It is customary in many Arab countries to pass bukhoor amongst the guests in the majlis (Arabic مجلس, meaning congregation). This is done as a gesture of hospitality. World famous bukhoor are manufactured by Al Nabeel. Among these, the most popular is the “touch me”.
Was fuer ein schoener Brauch! Die anderen Titel der sehr orientalisch angehauchten CD gefallen mir alle sehr gut!
Auf eine weitere neue CD moechte ich noch hinweisen: Old Man Luedecke, der Ostkuesten-Kanadier am Banjo hat seine zweite CD veroeffentlichtt, sie heisst “My Hands Are On Fire And Other Lovesongs”, schon den Titel alleine finde ich klasse, kommt als Zeile in diesem Song vor: Wir hoeren “The Rear Guard”

Eine Stimme wie Frank Sinatra und eine Schwäche für James-Bond-Drama-Arrangements: Da sind wir auch schon bei meinem Konzertip für den Monat Mai: Michael Bublé. Wir hörten den radiofreundlichen Titel “Haven’t Met You Yet”, von seiner cd “Crazy Love”. Auch Bublé kam aus dem neufundländischen St. John’s mit einem Arm voll Junos zurück: Bestes Pop-Album, Bestes Album, Beste Single und Fan Choice Award – vier Junos, plus ein fünfter, der an seinen neuen Produzenten Bob Rock ging für den hier gespielten Titel “Haven’t Met You Yet” – natürlich war auch David Foster nominiert, er produzierte Bublé’s Versionen von “Cry Me A River” und “All Of Me”.
Der Knabe ist single, sieht auch ganz schmuck aus, hat vermutlich ein höllisches Orchester dabei, da kann man dann auch schon mal ‘n bisken mehr hinblättern. Am 15. und 16. Mai ist er in London, England, am 18. in Paris im Bercy, am 19. Mai im holländischen Arnhem, dann geht es nach Italien für zwei Konzerte in Verona und Milan, am 25. Mai gastiert Buble in der Münchener Olympiahalle, am Tag danach im Züricher Hallenstadion, am 28. Mai kann man ihn sehen im Berliner O2, zwei Tage später im belgischen Antwerpen, am 31. Mai in Oberhausen, und am 1. Juni gibt er das letzte Konzert in der Hamburger Colorline Arena bevor er drei Wochen Pause macht, um am 22. Juni seine Tour durch die vereinigten Staaten mit einem Konzert in Tulsa, Oklahoma zu beginnen. Und falls Euer Terminkalender doch schon ausgebucht ist, im Oktober kommt der sexy Kanadier zurück: Dann nach Stuttgart, Köln, Frankfurt und Hannover.
Noch ein Konzerttip: Am 11. Mai ist kanadischer Punk-Songwriter Hawksley Workman im französischen Le Noumatrouff in Mulhouse zu sehen, am 12. Mai in der Pariser La Maroquinerie, am Dienstag, den 15. Mai im Londoner Borderline, am 18. Mai, das ist ein Freitag, im Amsterdamer Paradiso und am 20. Mai in Berlin – Tickets gibt es auf seiner myspace Seite. Er spielt auch hier in Toronto und am 1. Erwähnen muss ich auch Brocken Social Scene, die nach fünf Jahren nun wieder eine CD veröffentlichen, kriegt man alles online von deren Webseite, lohnt sich auch mal den Pfad zum deutschen Wikipediaeintrag zu nehmen, da die lange Liste der Bandmitglieder wie ein Who Is Who kanadischer Musikhipster aussieht. Die neue Scheibe heißt “Forgiveness Rock Record”, den Titel, der in der Sendung vom Samstag lief, “Worldsick”, kann man umsonst von Myspace herunterladen, und – mehr Konzerte, mehr live Musik hier in der BarKanada – Broken Social Scene touren ebenfalls durch Europa, am 18. Mai im Amsterdamer Melkweg, am Tag danach im Kölner Bürgerhaus Stollwerck, am 24. im Berliner Kesselhaus, genau einen Monat später im Münchener Backstage Werk, am 5. Juli in Frankfurt und am 6. Fast wie die olympische Flamme reiste auch Musiker Toronto-Resident Liam Titcomb nach Westen: Er konnte 50 000 Dollar zusammenbringen, indem er alle seine Konzerteinkünfte und Spenden während seiner Ost-nach-West-Tour von Krieg betroffenen Kindern zukommen lieβ – das Ergebnis: 100 Konzerte in zwei Monaten.
Kurz vor Weihnachten nahm Titcomb ausserdem einen Titel mit Chantal Kreviazuk, Shiloh and Lucas Silveira of The Cliks auf, “People Have The Power”, der auf der zehnten Kompilation War Child 10 zu hören ist. Die Indie Awards Nominierungen sind veröffentlicht, einen guten Überblick erhält man hier. Looks like Canadians did it again at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis: Just like Steve Marriner and Monkey Junk last year impressing everybody coming in third of representing bands from a hundred blues societies, this year it’s Nova Scotia’s Matt Andersen who blew everybody away. He received an award in the following category:

Now don’t confuse that with the Open Mic night on Thursday nights with Les Picard and violin player Kevin Davidson with different line up every week in the same venue, which is also great – Terry’s on Sundays from 2-5 pm!!
Great to see that old rebel again – felt even better to show him my tuning in front of all the jammers after I played “Natural Woman” – gonna look good on the resume to having interested that guitar god in a different tuning! It’s actually really easy, the low E goes down on D just as in Drop D, and then the B string gets lowered on A.
It makes every harmony sound a little bit more spacey as u can let the high strings ring open in a lot of different chords… yes, it does warp everything, but I really like that, needless to say …

Trixie Whitley – was für eine weit entwickelte Musikerin in Anbetracht ihres noch so jungen Lebens. Ich habe sie gesehen auf dem Montréal Festival Du Jazz, vermutlich etwa vor zwei Jahren… damals hat sie an einem Tag zwei Shows gespielt. Leider klappten einige Einsätze des ansonsten fabulösen Bassisten nicht wie geplant und ich erinnere mich, dass Trixie das live auf der Bühne kommentierte: “Fehler sind gut, da kann man draus lernen” – mit dem Kanadier Daniel Lanois am Bass scheint das ja nicht zu drohen, da alle anscheinend fließig für die neue Release üben…
Als ich nach der Vorstellung in der langen Schlange stand, um Ihren EP gegen eine PEACEWORK cd zu tauschen und endlich an der Reihe war, verriet sie mir, daß sie sich “andauernd einsam fühlt” – konnte ich ihr sogar nachfühlen mit den ständigen Transatlatik-Flügen zwischen Belgien, Holland und Kanadien, hoch oben ist die Luft leider dünn, liebste Trixie (wenn sich das nur nicht so altklug anhören würde….). Während sie auf der Bühne steht, scheint jenes verlorene Gefühl jedoch keine Rolle zu spielen. Seht selbst auf diesem Probenvideo:

D and E are the most beautiful parts of this’ month’s edition. The song changed completely as soon as this violin (or viola?) was sneaking in, on the same split second as Lovelace is saying his thanx for all the letters to prison and how they uplift his spirit.
I couldn’t have planned it: Tanya Tagak (probably overwhelmed with the pronunciation of that name) Gillis’ sound piece gave my quote some dynamics that stunned me at times. Impossible to think I authored that. Feels more like I’m channeling something, pretty sick …

In terms of time management for this year I’d have only one comment:
All we’re still debating is, how 2 soften up the changes. If we act now, maybe they’re gonna be easier 2 survive.
New nukes will be a disaster for an economically fragile period not to speak of the relatively irreversible and permanent damage and its “bonus” features which come with the highly radioactive and hot waste, vising its capabilities as potential material for A-bombs, and, actually at the beginning of that most decadent way of getting wasted, the mining of Uranium.
Show the government where ever u can: Profit has its reasonable and crucial limits.
Oh what a wonderful place this could be, if we made it one.

just when you think, “oh no, that was a split second too late or too early”, feel yourself tipping over backwards already calculating whether it’s going to save damage if you jump off and where the mast is going to go, you see the horizon tilting and the board turning into an alligator under your too fast and/or slow moves with your greenhorn cut up barefoot soles – THAT is when the sail catches you and the boom pulls so hard in your fists that the chalice in your palms will disguise your formerly fragile hands within two days. Shovels, that’s what I have now. “Pull the gas in slowly now”, he yells across the water, and my body tells me to step out both feet and lean into the wind to come up with the least against that pulling wind that carries me FOR FREE, while the board divides the gusty river with me on it. I f..g did it. I am wind surfing.
Yeeeeehaaaaa!
And when you’re in it, it’s fast. No thinking, just feeling it move you, feeling where it wants to be on the sail, moving, tilting, changing, adjusting your position, careful, not to hurt your feet on the router end.
The board so tippy, the possibilities of a freely turnable mast endless, the adrenalin rush under full sail doesn’t compare to much other. There is no stable position on that board except under wind. Tip the mast to the front it turns downwind, tilt it back u go into the wind. What a fine line that is, and how little can throw u out of it… it’s like dancing, though: don’t look at your feet, just never let your sail out of focus. The wind is your friend, just gotta feel out how to ride it… wow, riding the wind. How lucky am I that other people invented all that already??
This whole mast-boom-sail-board-and-router-thing is such a genius cohesion, but actually very simple when you look at it. Brilliant, really. I love it.
Scott showed me how to turn behind the sail in tipping the mast over to the front of the board – in weak winds, but nonetheless – to-tal-ly cool. I haven’t tried it yet, but just because of the stupid thunderstorms and the wind dying down yesterday.
Pride or some triumphant feeling in my chest. Standing on shore with the legs straight first since an hour and shaking. Maybe just coming off the a and trying to breathe, too. I knew all along that I wanted to do it and that I would like it. The first time I remember trying it, I was in an English class on Malta, with my mom and brother. We lived in families, they together in one, me in a different one. I remember the really big cockroaches on the streets at night, tea and toast with orange marmalade for breakfast and lots of salty water down my nostrils while trying to cross over to an island with my things over my head – I turned around… back? In any case, I never made it to the island, didn’t drown either, though. We had access to some kind of beach club close to the school, where they had some boards. The ones I tried had the mast coming out of the lock while trying to pull the sail up, so I gave up pretty fast, not without wrecking my back. The whole thing was free, but no lessons and pitiful equipment – tasted like a cheap copy of the real thing then, and it makes me so happy to have gone with that instinct and kept on looking for it…
I remember my disappeared dear cousin Elmar inviting me for lessons, he spent a lot of time windsurfing when we were still all living in G… he is blond, so blond, his hair is so fair…
I never went. Now I feel like going to Mexico (where he was last seen) just to try to find him, do something instead of just sitting here. I am debating if a facebook page would help finding him… it’s like admitting that he’s lost when u start your search. It’s like believing that u can still find him at the same time…
The younger sister of my grandmother (my mother’s mom’s sister) and her husband, my favorite uncle Mietek once taught me some sailing lessons in an optimist – I must have been a kid then, the wall was still up and everybody needed to get through these nasty border controls while traveling to Berlin or Szcezchyn, where the daughters of the couple live. I can still feel the water on my arse, while some blond almost-man pulled me back to shore off some lake, rope-attached to his motor boat, I was silently dying of shame while his stone grey-blue eyes stared into the open. I didn’t speak Polish, and I don’t remember him saying anything in German to me…
Except for the day when I managed to cut my feet up pretty painfully because I couldn’t get it together in that kind of super wind and drifted around more or less wasting myself on trying to pull the sail up in the gusting winds, I caught myself thinking “yeah, aunt Renate and uncle Mietek would be proud of me now if they were still alive”, when they were probably feeling really amused at best to watch my total failing which demonstrated sufficiently how I had not grasped any of the sketches on the chalk board concerning wind direction, turn line, tacking and so forth, that they wasted on me during that theory lesson.
It’s all behind me now. If only my feet’s cuts would stop burning… we used to jam in the morning, now it’s more like: “What’s the wind like, honey?”
Anybody heard the weather forecast?
After all that summer leisure I’d like to point out two things:
1. Merrickville residents saved so much water that the town is now raising the water fees. That sure is one hell of a policy in terms of motivation. Wrong signal, daddy-oh. Or are you trying to scratch up the lacking six million for the treatment plant? Meanwhile it can only appear decadent to flush your excrements with potable water instead of composting or fermenting to use the remaining energy…
2. I’d like to share Janet Stavinga’s invitation to the next Source Protection Report SPC meeting (no idea about this abbreviation) on August 7th, @ 1pm in the Plevna community hall.

Somebody sent me this by email and I am smiling over the timing… I suppose, a lot of you enjoy the rain as you don’t have to water your lawn, but it makes the grass grow so fast… well, I hope you’ll find this conversation between GOD and St. Francis stimulating, too…. The photo shows my backyard. I didn’t plant much and I never ever weed it, needless to say. I did put the stone walkway in…
GOD:
Frank, you know all about gardens and nature. What in the world is going on down there on the planet? What happened to the dandelions, violets, thistle and stuff I started eons ago?
I had a perfect no-maintenance garden plan. Those plants grow in any type of soil, withstand drought and multiply with abandon. The nectar from the long-lasting blossoms attracts butterflies, honey bees and flocks of songbirds. I expected to see a vast garden of colors by now. But, all I see are these green rectangles.ST. FRANCIS:
It’s the tribes that settled there, Lord. The Suburbanites. They started calling your flowers “weeds” and went to great lengths to kill them and replace them with grass.
GOD:
Grass? But, it’s so boring. It’s not colorful. It doesn’t attract butterflies, birds and bees; only grubs and sod worms. It’s sensitive to temperatures. Do these Suburbanites really want all that grass growing there?
ST. FRANCIS:
Apparently so, Lord. They go to great pains to grow it and keep it green. They begin each spring by fertilizing grass and poisoning any other plant that crops up in the lawn.
GOD:
The spring rains and warm weather probably make grass grow really fast. That must make the Suburbanites happy.
ST. FRANCIS:
Apparently not, Lord. As soon as it grows a little, they cut it – sometimes twice a week.
GOD:
They cut it? Do they then bail it like hay?
ST. FRANCIS:
Not exactly, Lord. Most of them rake it up and put it in bags.
GOD:
They bag it? Why? Is it a cash crop? Do they sell it?
ST. FRANCIS:
No, Sir, just the opposite. They pay to throw it away.
GOD:
Now, let me get this straight. They fertilize grass so it will grow. And, when it does grow, they cut it off and pay to throw it away?
ST. FRANCIS:
Yes, Sir.
GOD:
These Suburbanites must be relieved in the summer when we cut back on the rain and turn up the heat. That surely slows the growth and saves them a lot of work.
ST. FRANCIS:
You aren’t going to believe this, Lord. When the grass stops growing so fast, they drag out hoses and pay more money to water it so they can continue to mow it and pay to get rid of it.
GOD:
What nonsense. At least they kept some of the trees. That was a sheer stroke of genius, if I do say so myself. The trees grow leaves in the spring to provide beauty and shade in the summer. In the autumn, they fall to the ground and form a natural blanket to keep moisture in the soil and protect the trees and bushes. It’s a natural cycle of life.
ST. FRANCIS:
You better sit down, Lord. The Suburbanites have drawn a new circle. As soon as the leaves fall, they rake them into great piles and pay to have them hauled away.
GOD:
No. What do they do to protect the shrub and tree roots in the winter to keep the soil moist and loose?
ST. FRANCIS:
After throwing away the leaves, they go out and buy something which they call mulch. They haul it home and spread it around in place of the leaves.
GOD:
And where do they get this mulch?
ST. FRANCIS:
They cut down trees and grind them up to make the mulch.
GOD:
Enough! I don’t want to think about this anymore. St. Catherine, you’re in charge of the arts. What movie have you scheduled for us tonight?
ST. CATHERINE:
“Dumb and Dumber”, Lord. It’s a story about….
GOD:
Never mind, I think I just heard the whole story from St. Francis.
